The Welsh is a calm and inquisitive bird that is an excellent layer and forager. They will also sit and hatch a clutch of eggs. They are a fairly new breed of duck, being developed in Wales in the 1940s and brought to the U.S. in the 1960s. The Harlequin is one of the most docile duck breeds as well as relatively quiet and able to adapt to all climates. If chosen to butcher, they produce a leaner carcass than most ducks. They are a beautiful bird that is easily sex-able when adults, with the female retaining lighter coloring while the male feathers out with darker highlights and a green head. Due to their light coloration, they can be more vulnerable to predators. This breed is domestic meaning it cannot fly. All our ducks make great pets except for the Mallard.
