The Cayuga is one of the hardiest duck breeds and one of only a few that originated in the United States. They are a medium to heavy sized bird that are docile and make fair mothers. They are more difficult to clean, but their meat has quality tenderness and excellent flavor. Having decent laying capability, they can be used for dual-purpose. When reaching laying maturity, they will produce more black tinted eggs, but as they age will be more solid white. Due to being a darker colored breed they need access to shade cover in hot weather but are good foragers when out and about. As adults, they have a beautiful green/blue sheen throughout the body seen in the sunlight. This breed is domestic meaning it cannot fly. All our ducks make great pets except the Mallard.
